Surrounded by spectacular snow-capped peaks and flanked by steep, densely forested slopes, the city is an inspiring example of an elite Inca ceremonial center, dedicated to the worship of the mountain gods, the river and the elements of nature.
The tour to choquequirao begins where our bus will pick us up at the hotel at 6: 00hrs to begin our journey to the town of Cachora. During our trip, we will stop for a moment to observe the archaeological remains of Tarawasi from the bus, continuing then to the Cunyac Bridge between the departments of Cusco and Apurimac. We will then travel through the district of Curawasi and Saywite Stone, arriving in Cachora at approximately 10:00 hrs.
We will begin our hike from this area, along the inclined trail that leads to the Capuliyoc pass (2800 m.a.s.l.), where we will stop for lunch after a two-hour hike. Then we will continue our journey to the town of Chaquisqa (1930 m.a.s.l.). The entire course to Chaquisqa is downhill and the scenery is breathtaking and the weather is warm. Our first camp will be set up here. This is a three hour hike.
The route to Choquequirao begins in the city of Cusco between 5 am or 6 am. At that time, the bus leaves for Cachora (4 or 5 hours). There you can have breakfast to start the trek to Choquequirao. After approximately 5 hours of walking, you spend the night on the banks of the Apurimac River.
After breakfast (05:00 hrs), we will continue our hike to Playa Rosalina (1550 m.a.s.l.), followed by an early ascent to Santa Rosa (2100 m.a.s.l.) where we will stop for lunch. This course is the most difficult and will take three hours after which we will climb to Maranpata (2850 m.a.s.l.) which is an easier ascent. During our trip we will observe the existing vegetation in the area. Later, we will travel along a straight section to Sunchupata where we will camp. Hiking time is two hours. It is a one hour trip from this place to Choquequirao.
The hike continues very early after breakfast. The ascent becomes more arduous until we reach Marampata (3,000 masl). The route continues until finally arriving at the archaeological site of Choquequirao, after 10 kilometers of walking.
Very early and after breakfast (05:00 hrs) we will hike to Choquequirao, which is a one hour hike to see the sunrise at Choquequirao and where we will stay for three hours in the company of a guide who will provide you with all the details about this important Inca refuge. At the scheduled time, we will begin our return to Sunchupata, descending to Santa Rosa, where we will stop for lunch. Afterwards, we continue descending to Rosalina Beach, which takes approximately one hour. Upon arrival at Rosalina, we will continue our journey to the town of Chaquisqa, two hours from Rosalina, where we will spend the night.
After appreciating the most recondite areas of Choquequirao, we start the return trip by the same way we arrived. After almost 5 hours on the road, we set up camp in the Chiquisca area.
A hearty breakfast will be served in Chaquisqa (06:00 hrs) after which we will return by the same route to Cachora, which is the slope we descended the first day and which is a gentler climb of two hours until we arrive at the Capuliyoc pass. From here, it takes another two hours to reach the town of Cachora by a gentler route, arriving at approximately 12:00 hrs. During our journey we will observe the exotic flora and fauna, as well as views of majestic snow-capped peaks and the impressive Apurimac canyon. In the afternoon we will travel to the medicinal thermal baths of Qonoq, where we will stay for an hour and continue our journey to the city of Cusco. You will be transferred to the hotel. End of services.
The last day starts early. On the way you will arrive at the Wayna Qali viewpoint where you can appreciate the beauty of the Apurimac Canyon (considered the most beautiful in South America). After approximately 3 hours of walking, you will arrive at the town of Cachora where a car will return the tourist to the city of Cusco.
The city complex is composed of nine sectors, including the political and religious center, the source system of aqueducts and canals. It seems that most of the buildings were used for ceremonial purposes, residences of the priests or to store food.
The residential area is located in the lower zone, while the flanks of the mountains contain the cultivation terraces. Some irrigation canals were used permanently, while others were temporary. It also includes a group of family houses called Piquiwasi.
The ceremonial area is located around the main plaza; which was dedicated to the worship of the gods of the mountain, the river and other nature systems; there are also two levels of temples and buildings such as the Sunturwasi built for various purposes and collective services.
Choquequirao has only been excavated by 30%. In spite of this, it already has several very important Inca constructions:
The main plaza or Huaqaypata divided the site in two. It is a two-story stone construction.
Typical constructions of the main Inca centers. The purpose of these deposits was to store products for food, clothing and others. In Choquequirao, these platforms have internal subdivisions.
Choquequirao has a large number of platforms for cultivation. In the western sector there are 22 llama-shaped engravings arranged on 15 platforms. These figures are known as the ‘Llamas of the Sun’.
In the highest part of Choquequirao, there are up to 5 buildings whose purpose was probably to house the priests of the enclosure. It is believed that this Inca site was an important ceremonial center.
Also known as the ‘Triumphal Wall’. There, 17 funerary bundles and a gutter called “The house of the water fall” were found.
These rectangular buildings had multiple functions, such as workshop, administrative center, meeting space, etc. In Choquequirao there are 2 Kallankas in whose walls there were gutters that supplied water.
This oval platform construction is located on top of a hill. Due to the surrounding wall and the privileged view of the snow-capped mountains, the river and the whole area, it is believed that it had a religious purpose.
