Live an adventure on ATVs, crossing beautiful landscapes and picturesque villages full of living culture, delight your eyes visiting the Huaypo Lagoon and the salt mines of Maras.
Huaypo Lagoon
It is home to a great variety of fish and birds. It has a length of approximately 1.5 km by 800 m. It is ideal for the practice of aquatic sports. According to one of the local legends, the Sun God asked Manco Capac that his twin sons accompany him in his sunset. When they went to look for them, they discovered that the son who walked the farthest had turned into the Huaypo lagoon and the daughter into the Piuray lagoon. They are located at an altitude of 3,345 meters above sea level.
Salt mines of Maras
They are salt mines whose exploitation is as old as the Tahuantinsuyo. The inhabitants channel the saline water that emanates from the ground of a waterhole called Qoripujio into pools where, due to the effects of the sun, it evaporates leaving the salt on the surface, which is then treated to be sold in the local market.
Before starting the excursion, we have two schedules available: 6:00 hrs./ 13:00 hrs.
Once we have selected the schedule, we will leave in our own transportation to the adventure, about 45 minutes from Cusco to the community of CHEQUEREQ in the heart of Sacred Valley of the Incas. At this point we will practice a bit with the ATVs before starting the tour to the lagoon and the salt mines.
After having practiced, we will continue with the ATVs to the imposing “Laguna de Huaypo” of which many stories and legends are told, we will appreciate nature everywhere and a beautiful mirror of water formed by this lagoon.
Our adventure will continue along the unpaved road until we reach the town of Maras, from where you can see beautiful fields, as well as the Urubamba Mountain Range and the snow-capped peaks of Verónica and Chicón.
At the end of our ATV tour we descend to the salt mines known as “Salineras de Maras” in our transport. There we will be able to taste the delicious chocolate with salt, and its different combinations with products of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
To finally take our transportation back to the city of Cusco.
